Coming out of the closet seems fashionable nowadays. But it hasn't always been. Here are some notable folks who never lived to see a time when they did not believe it was "out to be out."

Alvin Ailey Jr. (Jan. 5, 1931 – Dec. 1, 1989) was one of four dance legends honored with a U.S. Postal Service stamp in 2004. His is pictured above right. Ailey founded the Alvin Ailey Dance American Dance Theater in New York. He died of AIDS at age 57. West 61st Street between Amsterdam and Columbus avenues was renamed "Alvin Ailey Way" in his honor.
