Transportation Alternatives: Bike Month NYC 2008
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The 17th Annual Bike Month is underway in New York City. As the weather turns for the better across the tri-state area, and more and more residents make their way into the sunshine, what better way to shed the winter pounds while simultaneously helping the environment than taking to the roads and parks via your bicycle.
Bike Month aims to celebrate the fun, convenience and ease of cycling in and around New York City.
The benefits of cycling transcend far beyond the physical. Whether it's a leisure loop of beautiful Central Park or a ride along the lovely tree canopy and grand vistas of the Hudson River from Riverside Park, riding a bicylce as an alternative form of transportation makes for a harmonious scenic experience of New York City while helping to alleviate the city of commuter congestion.
If you can't find the time to get to the gym before or after work, consider using your bicycle as your means of travel to the office. Your heart and your neighbors will thank you.
If you are one of the city's 120,000 everyday cyclists, a weekend cyclist or just thinking about bicycling to work, Bike Month has an event for you. So get involved. Make the commitment to better health, a better environment and a better New York City.
Bike Month has taken huge strides since its birth in 1990 as a one-day celebration. Since then, it has grown into a week long celebration of bicycling in NYC, to a month full of activities that showcase bicycling in NYC and the tri-state region.
Cycling as an activity and as a sport has grown by leaps and bounds during that time. On an average day, 112,000 New Yorkers bicycle - up 10% over the past ten years and 50% in the past two decades. According to Bike Month NYC 2008, this number continues to grow fueled by government and advocates' efforts to improve and promote biking.
Join Transportation Alternatives and the New York City Department of Transportation, Department of Parks and Recreation and Department of Health in a unified effort to make New York City a better place to live.
As May unwinds, put the cars back into the garages and save the taxi fares to and from work. Grab a bike, or go for a walk, and find some of the hundreds of events planned this May for the promotion of a safer, healthier and more enjoyable New York City.
