Florida State fans and recruits can rest a little easier after 79-year-old head coach Bobby Bowden announced Friday that he is returning for his 34th season. Bowden said the details of a new contract are currently being finalized.
In addition to Bowden, longtime defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews will return to help rebuild a defense that loses many key players.
Bowden has been racing Penn State head coach Joe Paterno to see which coach will finish with the most career wins in Division I/FBS history. Currently, Bowden trails Paterno by just one victory.
But with most of the offense returning for the Seminoles, Florida State could be set up for a run to the ACC Championship in 2009. Quarterback Christian Ponder now has over a season of experience under his belt and returns most of his receivers and the entire offensive line.
Florida State was 9-4 in 2008, finishing with a dominating bowl win over Wisconsin, and were ranked number 21 in the final Associated Press poll.
