NFC Championship Pits Corzine Vs. Wisconsin Gov.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ― Bratwurst and tomato may go together nicely in a sandwich, but they're also the chips in a high-stakes wager between the New Jersey and Wisconsin governors.

With the Green Bay Packers set to the play the New York Giants in Sunday's NFC title game, the governors from the home states for both teams have engaged in their own battle.

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle has bratwurst on the line, said Carla Vigue, a Doyle spokeswoman.

In return, New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine is wagering a case of Jersey Fresh tomatoes, said Corzine spokeswoman Lilo Stainton.

The Giants may claim to be from New York, but they play in Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., as do the New York Jets. Technically, the only pro football team to play in New York is the Buffalo Bills.

Doyle is also betting bratwurst with New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who is offering pastrami.

And Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt is betting New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Schmitt put up a gift basket with 17 cheese spreads from U.S. Specialty Cheese, 20 strip steaks from Smithfield Beef, and 3 pounds of chocolate from Beerntsen's Candies. He also promised to toss in a pair of cheese wedge sunglasses from Cheese Shades, according to a news release from his office. All the companies are based in Green Bay.

Bloomberg bet a 10-pound New York-style cheesecake from Manhattan's Carnegie Deli, a case of Brooklyn Lager from Brooklyn Brewery, and 20 pounds of Porterhouse steak and six bottles of steak sauce from Peter Luger Steakhouse in Brooklyn.
