Sore Legs Sideline Giants Pro Bowl TE Shockey

ALBANY (CBS/AP) ― Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey missed two practices with sore legs at the New York Giants training camp on Thursday.

Shockey had complained that his legs were bothering him on Wednesday. Coach Tom Coughlin said after the morning practice on Thursday at the University at Albany that the six-year veteran had upper leg soreness and would sit out both workouts.

Cornerback Kevin Dockery continues to be sidelined with a concussion suffered over the weekend.

"Last night the doctor said it is probably going to be day-to-day," Coughlin said. "It could be a while or it could be that he wakes up and feels better. But even when he does say he feels better, he is going to have to go through those tests to prove that he is ready to go."

While training camps can be boring, the fans love the passing drills that new assistant Chris Palmer has put in for the quarterbacks.

The quarterbacks have to work on their footwork and then throw the ball into one of two large nets set on either side of the field. On the nets are colored circle targets and three square targets that cover a net sock to catch the ball.

Before the throw is made, Palmer either will yell one, two or three for one of the squares or one of the colors. The quarterbacks are supposed to hit the assigned target.

The fans go wild when the ball goes in one of the squares, even though Palmer may have called a color as the target. The quarterbacks, of course, play along as if they hit the right target, raising their arms in triumph and putting up one finger.

Even coach Tom Coughlin has been amused.

"The quarterback will act like he just won the World Series and the place goes crazy and he may not even hit the right spot," Coughlin said.

Eli Manning had the only correct hit on Thursday morning although Jared Lorenzen, Anthony Wright and Tim Hasselbeck egged the crowd on when the ball went into one of the squares.

"The best way to look at it is to watch the other guys that have gone," Lorenzen said. "If they are sitting there saying it's incomplete, then we didn't hit it. The other guy is going to play up to it because the fans love it, so we love it."

Manning said the drill is useful.

"It keeps you moving," he said. "You don't know when he's going to tell you to throw it, and you have to get it out quick. It's like when you're moving in the pocket and someone flashes open, you have to have the ball ready."

NOTES:

Rookie Steve Smith seems to make a highlight catch every practice. The second-round draft pick from Southern California had two great catches in the evening practice on Thursday. The best was an Eli Manning pass that he tapped out of the hands of cornerback R.W. McQuarters and then caught while falling near the sideline. Smith also beat McQuarters for a touchdown on a "last play of the game" play from the 14-yard line. ... Manning hooked up with Plaxico Burress on two long pass plays in the evening. ... Five NFL officials worked the evening practice. ... Placekickers Lawrence Tynes and Josh Huston have been shaky lately. Both were 2-of-3 on field-goal attempts in the evening. ... Rookie tight end Kevin Boss has made some good catches. It remains to be seen if he can block.
