On Monday Mayor Michael Bloomberg verbally whipped almost everyone connected to the Plaxico Burress shooting, raising the question: was the mayor overreacting to the latest outrage involving a gun? Or, was there possibly a series of cover-ups?
"Look, we take guns very seriously," Bloomberg said.
The mayor continued Tuesday on the Burress warpath. But it was his remarks from Monday, scorching New York Presbyterian Hospital, the Giants and the NFL, and the Latin Quarter nightclub, which has even NYPD and the district attorney investigators asking: was there a cover-up?
There are four main areas of concern and the investigation, for now, is indeed being handled as a cover-up.
First, the Giants and the NFL: Greg Aiello, vice president of public relations for the league, told CBS 2 HD on Tuesday that after the Giants called the NFL, the league called the NYPD at about 10 a.m. the morning following the incident in which Burress accidentally shot himself.
But a top investigator told CBS 2 HD Tuesday: "Then we want to know why we didn't know what hospital he was in until an hour and a half after he left?"
Second, the Latin Quarter club: Police told CBS 2 HD the Latin Quarter nightclub has turned over surveillance video and a shell casing from what is believed to be Burress' gun. But an investigator said: "We still want to know how the gun gets into the club." And the club can expect to get surprise "visits" about things like the age of who's being served.
Third, Antonio Pierce: The attorney for the Giants standout linebacker said Pierce will meet with the district attorney. However, investigators want to know when? They said the lawyer is being elusive on a date. And, just how did the gun get out of the club and to New Jersey? How did Burress get to the hospital?
Which brings us to the fourth area of concern, the hospital: On Monday night, New York Presbyterian suspended the employee who did not tell police they had treated someone for a gunshot wound, as required by law.
But investigators want to know: Why was this hospital picked by Burress' group?
Getting back to Bloomberg, as to whether his comments may have already "convicted" Burress listen to his honor:
"I didn't convict anybody. the guy goes to a hospital with an in and out wound, carrying a loaded gun in his pocket. That's not convicting anybody," Bloomberg said.
"The guy," Burress, and an unlicensed gun. Does all this mean prison time? Investigators said it's quite possible. But they also believe until they talk to Pierce, even basic questions about that night will remain unanswered.
