Yankees To A Man: Win This One For George

Bronx Bombers Pay Respects To 79-Year-Old Owner, Vow To Take World Series To Phillies On Boss' Behalf

NEW YORK (CBS) ― The countdown continued Tuesday to the so-called "Turnpike Series" -- and baseball fans in the tri-state are buzzing.

Game 1 is set for 8 p.m. on Wednesday

But as fans snatch up more memorabilia, some communities -- even some families -- are finding themselves divided.

The anticipation is building as the Yankees and Phillies are on the eve of the World Series. Philly won it all last year. The Yanks have done it 26 times, but have suffered through a drought for almost a decade -- their last championship came in 2000.

Regardless, everyone's ready to get the Series started.

The Yankees were back on the field Tuesday for their first full workouts since wrapping up the ALCS on Sunday night, and they said they are ready to go.

"It's gonna be a great series. I mean in the end it really doesn't matter who you play because you gotta play your game," Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira said. "But with Philly being the defending champion, we have to take the title away from them."

"The two best teams are playing against each other and we're both playing extremely well and very confident, with the horses on the mound. It's gonna be fun," added third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

While the "House That Ruth Built" was the home of 26 world champions, the Yankees will be looking to bring the winning tradition to the "House That George Built" – 79-year-old George Steinbrenner. The Yanks' owner is expected to be in attendance Wednesday night.

"He's the reason why we're here. He's the reason why we have all these guys on this team," captain Derek Jeter said. "You want to go out there … you want to perform well for him. You want to try to win a championship for him. But we want to win one for ourselves, too."

"This team is here because of him," catcher Jorge Posada added. "We want to thank him and that's why we want to win it for him."

"Always try to make our owner – our boss – happy," closer Mariano Rivera said. "I don't think there's nothing better than giving him the championship."

While these two teams are pretty evenly matched from top to bottom, the same can be said about their fan bases. Even the players expect a wild one.

"It's gonna be a lot of fun. You know, our fans aren't going to like them coming in here and their fans aren't going to like us going up there.

"The people in Philadelphia booed Santa Claus."

That's true. The Philly fans did indeed boo Santa Claus back in the 1970s. What do the Phillies think of the New York fans? Shortstop Jimmy Rollins said he expects them to get all over Pedro Martinez when he pitches in Game 2.

But overall Rollins said: Bring them on. We can take them.
