Yankee fans were celebrating into the wee hours as the Bombers clinched the American League East title, and what makes it even sweeter is that it comes after a three-game sweep of their most hated rivals: the Red Sox.
The division-clinching win was the Yankees' 100th win of the season in their brand new stadium.
"We have the best record in the American League. We have the home field advantage for the whole playoffs and we beat Boston. Everyone's very happy," said Joe Bastone, owner of the Yankee Tavern.
The Yankees started slowly, giving up two early runs. The tide turned when Hideki Matsui smashed a single to grab the lead in the 7th inning and Mariano Rivera wrapped up the win with a scoreless 9th.
Just last year, the Yankees limped to the finish line after not making the playoffs for the first time in a decade, so this year in the locker room, Yankee joy was bubbling over for the players and the fans.
The champagne corks couldn't pop fast enough.
"To be able to take on anything that's brought to us, it's been a great year," said pitcher Nick Swisher.
Mariano Rivers had to tell his teammates "enough" as they doused the closer with the bubbly, amply sliding off his baseball cap.
"We want the dodgers in the World Series, Dodgers. That'll be beautiful. Let's bring Joe Torre. Joe Torre. Manny Ramirez with him too," a pair of joyful Yankees fans said.
