So how do fans feel about Joe Torre leaving the Yankees?
CBS 2 HD spoke to many shocked fans in Times Square.
Inside the Yankee store, the debate raged on over the departure of the beloved skipper.
"They should have given him more money," one fan said.
"You're expected to win when you have a payroll of $200 million," added another.
"He did his job for 13 years in a row."
In the 12 years as Bombers manager, Torre's teams never missed the playoffs but the seven-year drought since the organization's last world title had some fans ready to say goodbye and good riddance.
"I don't think he was the right guy for the job in the first place," one said.
Instead of being fired, Torre is walking away, refusing to take a substantial pay cut the one-year guaranteed contract came with.
"I support his decision," fan Carrie Premsager said. "I understand he felt its out of respect for what he did for the Yankees. I support that.'
There are others now worried about the residual effect of the Yankees' low-ball offer, Torre's reaction to it and what impact Thursday's news will have on the long term health of the team.
"Big time. Big time," fan Perry Roman said when asked if he was disappointed with Torre's decision. "I know Mariano, Posada and Jeter will all have issues. They could all walk with him."
