Yankees manager Joe Girardi has decided to bench slumping outfielder Nick Swisher for Game 2 of the World Series.
Jerry Hairston Jr. was in right field and batting seventh for Thursday night's game against Philadelphia. Hairston is 10 for 27 in his career against Phillies starter Pedro Martinez.
Swisher went 0 for 3 in New York's 6-1 loss in Wednesday night's World Series opener. He is batting .114, with no homers and 12 strikeouts in the postseason.
Jose Molina also replaced Jorge Posada behind the plate. Molina has caught each of A.J. Burnett's starts in the playoffs.
The Yankees hit a speed bump in Game 1 of the Turnpike Series.
The Bronx Bombers will be looking to even the World Series with the Phillies in Yankee Stadium Thursday night after Wednesday's embarrassing 6-1 loss to the defending champs.
The team and the fans are already preparing for Game 2 in the Bronx.
"I think they have a lot of potential," Yankee fan Yvonne Snyder said. "They had a hard time against their pitcher tonight, I think they just really couldn't hit off of him."
"I'm a little bummed out, but, you know what, I still think we'll win in 5," Yankee fan Serge Righetti said. "Yanks in 5."
