Senior News Producer Jeff Capellini Gives His Thoughts On Thursday's Game 1 Between The Longtime Rivals

NEW YORK (CBS) ― In its continuing quest to be New York City's leading television news Web site, WCBSTV.com has decided to give you a minute-by-minute rundown of the goings on during the opening game of the Fourth of July weekend showdown between the Yankees and Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.

Senior news producer Jeff Capellini is a lifelong fan of the Bronx Bombers and has covered them professionallly. He has no love for the Red Sox, but will do his best to give you some objective musings as the two teams look to move a step closer to first place in the AL East.

So please sit back and enjoy as Jeff gives his take on Thursday's action.

7 p.m.: David Ortiz says the two best teams in baseball are about to open a huge series in the Bronx. The Red Sox have lost five straight and the Yankees four of seven. Hmmm ... makes you wonder how much Ortiz wishes he was playing in this series and not eating cheeseburgers and haging out with A-Rod. Those two hugged during the pregame workout. Somewhere Madonna stewed ...

7:10 p.m.: Manny Ramirez is hitting .526 (10-for-19) with 3 HRs and 8 RBIs against the Yankees this season. Odds are he'll add to those totals significantly over the next four days. ... We're underway. Andy Pettitte vs. Jacoby Ellsbury. ... Ellsbury caught looking. ...

7:21 p.m.: Ramirez grounds into what should have been a 4-6-3 DP to the end the inning, but Derek Jeter threw the ball into the stands. A run scores and it's 1-0 Red Sox. Is it me or has there been something wrong with Jeter all season? He's just not himself and it's painfully obvious. ... Mike Lowell raps single to left. Johnny Damon's throw home rolls from shortstop to Jorge Posada. Pettitte should be out of this inning no harm, no foul. You can't give the Red Sox extra outs, EVER. ... 2-0 Sox. ...

7:30 p.m.: WOW! Jon Lester just got squeezed big time by umpire Wally Bell on a 3-2 pitch to Jeter. First and second, no out ....

7:37 p.m.: Bobby Abreu beats throw on 6-4-3 grounder. A-Rod up, first and third ... Miserable swinging K. ... It's up to Jason Giambi. ... Miserable swinging K. Lester is a tremendous pitcher. ...

7:40 p.m.: Fake moustaches are popping up all over the stadium. ...

7:43 p.m.: Pettitte is struggling. Two on, none out. The difference between the Yankees and Red Sox this season has been the fact that the Bombers don't get enough hits with RISP, and the Red Sox do. You watch. ... Julio Lugo puts down nice sacrifice. ...

7:49 p.m.: Ellsbury loops double to right. It's 4-0. I start a four-day vacation after this shift. In related news, there's still a good chance of severe weather before the fifth. ...

8:06 p.m.: Lester is rolling. Pettitte just wiggled out of trouble by starting a 1-4-3 DP. Yankees need to start chipping away at this lead because the Sox are one big inning away from ending things. Memo to the Yankees: Boston pitchers are not Texas pitchers. ...

8:13 p.m.: There is such a difference in discipline between these two teams. The Red Sox lead the AL in walks. The Yankees lead the AL in people thinking they lead the AL in walks. The Sox are patient; the Yankees aren't. Damon flew out to right on second pitch. Jeter maybe looked at one pitch before grounding into DP to end the third. ...

8:25 p.m.: The Red Sox manufactured another run in the fourth. Single, stolen base, grounder to right side, sac fly. That's how you do it. ... Abreu and A-Rod take a combined three pitches and come up with two outs. Giambi strikes out swinging. Eight-pitch inning for Lester. This is painful to watch. ...

8:37 p.m.: More situational hitting for Sox results in another run as Lowell skies to deep right, driving in J.D. Drew. Kevin Youkilis soubles to left, sending Ramirez to third. Pettitte is finally lifted. Thank God. ...

8:40 p.m.: Dan Geise gets Crisp to sky to left to end the inning. ... 6-0 Sox heading into bottom of the fifth. ...

8:52 p.m.: I'm playing the trotters in Saratoga in approximately 15 hours. No races on Fourth of July night, but we'll be there for 12:30 p.m. session. Fireworks probably Friday night. A little barbecue action in the state park on Saturday afternoon and then catching a show at SPAC. By the way, Lester has allowed two hits through five. ....

9:15 p.m.: Geise has been the Yankees' lone bright spot tonight. ... Lester has been absolutely fantastic. He's a great story, even if he wasn't good. The fact that he's very good only adds to his legend. Recovering from cancer and pitching like this is just an amazing accomplishment. ...

9:20 p.m.: Lester spinning 2-hit shutout with seven Ks through seven. ... Yankees better be careful. Josh Beckett is pitching Friday. This series could spin out of control quickly. ...

9:40 p.m.: Robinson Cano singles to center. Wilson Betemit swings at FIRST PITCH and ground into 5-4-3 DP. ... Lester, who had never started in Yankee Stadium before tonight, will finish this game. He just passed 90 pitches. Melky Cabrera doubles down left-field line, but there's no way they are scoring. Wait, actually, is A-Rod up soon? We're down 7-0. It's about time he homers. ... Damon Ks.

9:43 p.m.: Time to let Timmy Lupus and Ogilvie get some playing time, Buttermaker. ...

9:51 p.m.: Lester is going to try to finish it. His last complete game was his no-hitter, a 130-pitch masterpiece against K.C. on May 19. ... Yankees bullpen has allowed 1 earned run in its last 16 innings. ... Lester has thrown 100 pitches, including 67 strikes. ...

9:58 p.m.: Jeter singles leading off the ninth. ... Abreu ground into 6-4-3 DP. ... A-Rod flies out to left on first pitch. Sox win 7-0.

Well, that's it. The Yankees looked awfully gutless tonight. Part of it can be attributed to Lester, but this team hasn't shown much heart this season. Wow, they scored 18 runs against the Rangers. Wow, they have such a vaunted lineup. Wow, A-Rod. Wow, Jeter.

It all translate to four games over .500 and third place through 86 games. It's getting late early in the Bronx.

Thanks for checking in ....
