Add another statistic to the font of facts and figures about the New York Giants' Super Bowl victory this year:
The city Sanitation Department says fans tossed 36.5 tons of paper at the team's ticker-tape parade Tuesday.
That's hardly scrimping, but it's far less than at some past parades. Sanitation Department spokesman Vito A. Turso says 5,438 tons of confetti were collected after the celebration of the Allied victory over Japan in 1945, for instance.
Joe Timpone is a former Sanitation Department staffer known for his ticker-tape parade expertise. He points to a few factors in the confetti slowdown, including modern office buildings with windows that don't openand the fact that ticker tape itself isn't used any more.
