Police Foil Brooklyn iPhone Scam

NEW YORK (AP) ― It's hard to find a popular item like an iPhone at a discount, but at least a dozen people spotted a great deal on Craigslist. But, instead of walking away with a new gadget, they were robbed at gunpoint when they showed up to get the phone.

Police say four men were responsible for carrying out a violent, bait and switch scam. The scam that took advantage of the trust factor involved in using the popular networking website, Craigslist.

Detectives say a dozen people responded to an ad featuring an iPhone for sale in Brooklyn.

The prospective buyers who arranged to meet the suspects on a Flatbush street corner to pick up their iPhone wound up staring down the barrel of a loaded gun.

In all, police say the victims were robbed of thousands of dollars in cash and valuables.

In order to bust the robbery ring, undercover officers set up a fake buy and slapped handcuffs on these accused high tech criminals.
