Tech Minute: Watching Out For Phishing Scams

Phishing scams -- spelled with a P-H instead of an F but sounding just like "fishing" -- can get you into some hot water. It starts when you get an honest looking e-mail that tries to trick you into revealing your usernames, passwords and credit card details. According to CNET.com, more than 55,000 phishing attacks were launched in the first half of 2009. In this week's CNET Tech Minute, CNET.com's Brian Cooley tells us how to avoid getting hooked.

Woman Charged For Pa. Woman's Nude Facebook Photo

A New York woman who works as a bartender in northwestern Pennsylvania has been charged with using a male customer's cell phone to post a nude photo of another woman on Facebook. Police in Warren didn't immediately say why 22-year-old Lindsay Head, of Falconer, N.Y. targeted the other woman, or if she even knew her. Police filed a charge of illegally transmitting obscene material against Head on Friday.

eBay Sets Skype Loose At $2.75 B Valuation

Auction site eBay has, as long anticipated, sold off the Skype telephony service to a group of investors that includes Marc Andreessen's new Andreessen Horowitz group, Silver Lake, and the Skype co-founders' Joltid Ltd. The investor group now holds about 70 percent of the company; eBay retains the rest in a minority stake.

AT&T Loses First Legal Battle Against Verizon Ads

AT&T has lost the first battle in a legal war against Verizon Wireless to force the company to stop showing advertisements that compare its 3G wireless network coverage with Verizon's coverage. A federal judge in Atlanta Wednesday declined to grant AT&T a temporary restraining order that would force Verizon to stop showing the ads.

NBC newsman Brian Williams said Wednesday he's not sure if Walter Cronkite would have succeeded in the age of cable news, blogs and Twitter. "I am convinced that had he come along today, I don't think he would have cracked through. I think there's too much noise, too much to cut through for a modest man from Missouri," Williams told an audience in Phoenix. "But God and history combined to give him to us right when we needed him."

Atlantis Docks At International Space Station

Space shuttle Atlantis is arriving at the International Space Station. Atlantis docked just before noon Wednesday. Before pulling up, the shuttle performed a pirouette for the space station cameras to check for any damage to the thermal tiles on its belly. NASA says so far, all indications are that Atlantis made it through Monday's liftoff just fine.

Space shuttle Atlantis' astronauts scoured their ship Tuesday for any signs of launch damage while pursuing the International Space Station. Atlantis and its crew of six will hook up with the space station Wednesday. The shuttle gradually was gaining on the station, and the two craft were on opposite sides of Earth at midday Tuesday, not quite 24 hours into the chase. "You've got 8,000 miles of rock between you and it," Mission Control informed shuttle commander Charles Hobaugh.

YouTube Launches API For Media To Find News Video

YouTube is trying to help shrinking newsrooms expand their video coverage without increasing their payrolls. The assist comes in the form of "YouTube Direct," a free tool made for media interested in amateur video of calamities, protests or other newsworthy events. The application launched Tuesday as a way for news organizations to solicit and show videos on their own Web sites.
