Some Queens Tenants Living In Filth
by Hazel Sanchez
QUEENS (CBS) ―
A Jamaica Queens building has 128 open building code violations and tenants say the building landlord is ignoring their complaints.
Tenant Michael Blanchard showed CBS 2 News home video of urine leaking profusely from the ceiling.
Blanchard videotaped the raw sewage because he says he felt no one would believe he paid more than a thousand dollars a month to live in the apartment.
"The living conditions are horrible." Blanchard said. "We can barely take a shower and just live our lives like we're human beings."
Blanchard and his mother have rented their Jamaica Queens apartment for 20 years.
For the last ten, Blanchard says the place has been falling apart and his landlord has done little or nothing to fix it.
A broken pipe is feeding a growing water stain in the living room, and has completely destroyed a bathroom.
Another leak in the kitchen has caused the counter to sink. And Michael says a building repairman came to look at it but left a gaping hole that now welcomes roaches and rats.
"I've called HPD. I've called the building dept. All kinds of steps but nothing has been done."
CBS 2 News has tried to reach the landlord, but as of Monday night, we could not reach him.
