Angry Protestors Demonstrate At NYPD Headquarters

Cooler Heads Prevail, But Leaders Fear Eventual Violence

CBS 2's Coverage Of The Death Of Sean Bell

by Brendan Keefe
NEW YORK (CBS) ― Hundreds of protestors poured into Foley Square -- New York's seat of justice -- Wednesday night saying there is none for the black New Yorkers shot by the NYPD.

"What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!" was the chant as angry citizens spilled over into the streets near NYPD headquarters.

"The police walked under Guliani and the police walk under Bloomberg, except Bloomberg has some blacks whose campaigns he funded," City Councilman Charles Baron said.

Baron predicted violence if the five officers who fired the 50 shots are not charged with the Nov. 25 killing of unarmed groom Sean Bell outside a Jamaica nightclub.

"There are people who don't even want to demonstrate anymore," Baron said. "There are people telling me, 'Charles I don't have no more demonstrations. I don't have no more press conferences. I'm not counting on no more DAs. I'm not counting on the FBI, the U.S. Attorney to police the police. I'm letting you know now Charles I'm gonna break. They are lucky we wanna march.'"

The message was heard loud and clear at police headquarters. NYPD employees watched out the windows as demonstrators marched through the plaza beneath them.

Officers assigned to the demonstration stood inches away from signs calling them racists. That tension escalated as protesters spilled into the roadway at Centre and Worth streets.

"Don't shoot ME! Don't shoot ME! Don't shoot ME!," screamed the crowd.

Police officers with helmets and scooters were called in to form three lines to contain but not confront the protesters, who counted off shots, ending at the number 50.

"All our black leaders, all the strength that they say we're supposed to have, I'm wondering where it is. Because it's still going to happen tomorrow," protestor Mark Bryant said.
