Brooklyn School Reopens After Police Lockdown

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A Brooklyn school has reopened after police locked it down Thursday afternoon because of report that a student had a gun.

The incident set off a massive response by the NYPD. Chopper 2 HD was overhead as officers lined up students searching for the teen who fled with the gun.

Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg says the NYPD was called to John Dewey High School after a teacher claimed to have seen a handgun fall out of a student's book bag. The teacher tried to approach the student, who then grabbed the bag and ran.

"If there is a gun in there, how did the child get in there with a gun first of all? How did he get out?" asked concerned parent, Olivia Betea.

"I just know that my 16-year-old is in there under a desk," Maria Couch told CBS 2.

Couch got a call from a panicking Christina, who was on her cell phone crouched underneath a desk. After authorities reached her, she spoke outside the school of her terror.

"We were under a desk for about 20 minutes and we didn't know what was going on. My class started freaking out because we heard helicopters," said Christina Couch.

The lockdown began around 12:30 p.m., Feinberg says. The school, which has about 3,100 students enrolled, was reopened around 3 p.m. after a thorough investigation by police. Police say they have identified the student who fled the school with the weapon, but as of 5 p.m. they have yet to find him.
