A 24-year-old Staten Island woman says she was robbed and sexually assaulted just two blocks from the Staten Island Mall. It happened at about 8 p.m. Tuesday near the express bus stop at Vassar Street in the New Springville section of the borough.
The victim told police that a young man, possibly in his late teens, grabbed her from behind and pulled her through a gate opening in a fence behind the bus stop. She says he claimed to have a gun, forced her to perform a sex act and then took cash and her wallet from her purse before fleeing the scene.
Detectives and NYPD K-9 units descended on the neighborhood for much of the evening investigating. Yellow crime scene tape cordoned off an area next to a backyard storage shed. Detectives could be seen looking down on the crime scene from the rear decks of a nearby home.
A police source told CBS 2 that dogs followed the assailant's scent approximately two blocks before the trail went cold.
New Springville residents seem stunned by the boldness of the attack. Jeanette Liubicich, who walks her dog along the busy streets, said she never recalled hearing anything like it in the area, although she said the area had gotten "a little shady" in recent months.
The victim was taken to Staten Island University Hospital for treatment.
