NYPD On The Look Out For Cell Phone Guns

NEW YORK (CBS) ― New York City police have issued an internal memo warning officers to be on the look out for a gun designed to look like a cell phone. The weapon has four .22 caliber bullets in it. They are fired from holes in the top.

An internal New York City Police operations order, issued at the direction of Commissioner Kelly, warns that police overseas "have reported the recovery of several caches of .22 caliber handguns disguised as cellular phones, believed manufactured somewhere in Europe." The order notes that the gun is fired by pressing the 5, 6, 7 or 8 buttons.

The police order particularly alerted officers doing security at courts and police headquarters; it included a schematic of the cell phone gun and photographs of it.
Agents of the Federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives welcome the NYPD action and note the Federal authorities have been aware of the cell phone gun for seven years but have never recovered any in the United States.

Joseph Green of ATFE says, "The advisory the NYC police department put out was one of most important it could do. It is a good reminder to watch out for these disguised weapons, cell phone gun, beeper guns and pen guns.

Since at least 2004 TSA screeners at airports have been watching for these cell phone guns as well. They are heavier than regular phones and have odd protrusions like the lock on the bottom of the cell phone gun.
