Westchester Deadbeats Targeted In Ad Campaign
by Tony Aiello
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (CBS) ―
Westchester County is trying to shame deadbeat parents into paying up by putting their pictures in the paper.
Pictures of four parents who owe thousands of dollars in child support appeared Tuesday in an ad purchased by the county in the
New York Post.
Alberto Almeida, 49, was among those pictured. His ex-wife hasn't seen him in seven years, and his daughter hasn't seen a penny of the $62,000 he owes in child support.
"She's our only child, I don't know why he's not so responsible," said Carmen Almeida, his ex-wife. "He just calls her like once a year, asking 'how are you?' That's it. That's not a father, you know."
When Westchester County asked Almeida about putting her ex-husband's picture in the paper, she talked to her daughter, then quickly agreed.
"That way maybe it will wake him up," Almeida said. "Realize he has a child, he has responsibility."
The county says there are thousands of men, and a handful of women, who are behind on support payments to children who live in Westchester.
Some of those deadbeats are trying to hide, so the county hopes to locate the worst of the worst by putting their pictures in the paper.
"We want to embarrass these guys," said County Executive Andy Spano. "We want people who know them to tell us where they are so we can go after them."
Spano said the ad is the latest tool in an arsenal that includes garnishing wages and revoking drivers licenses of parents who don't pay.
Carmen Almeida hopes the effort helps locate her ex-husband. She said if he doesn't pay up soon, their daughter may be forced to drop out of college.
