Man Jumps From Airliner Bound For Newark
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS) ―
A passenger on a commercial flight preparing to take off Monday from Fort Lauderdale ran up the aisle, banged on the cockpit door and then jumped out a door, authorities said.
The man was detained on the tarmac and was transported to a hospital, said Broward County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jim Leljedal. The man was not immediately identified by authorities. He will be arrested once out of the hospital, Leljedal said.
The Continental Airlines flight was headed from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to Newark, N.J., Leljedal said.
Airport Spokesperson Jim Reynolds says the man arrested was apparently a passenger aboard a Continental jetliner who was involved in some sort of argument onboard. It's believed the man jumped from an emergency exit, and gained access to the runway.
Runways at all commercial airports are considered security areas, so the airport was put on alert by the passenger's action. Security officers and police were able to capture the man by using a taser.
