Rapper Foxy Brown skipped a brief court hearing Wednesday, but a city judge told her lawyer the performer had better attend the next session, which could determine whether charges against her by a former colleague will proceed.
Brown's lawyer, Brian J. Neary, assured Judge Cynthia D. Jackson that his client, whose real name is Inga Marchand, would be present to contest the two complaints, which include making terroristic threats.
During the three-minute session, the judge granted Neary's request for a probable cause hearing, setting it for Sept. 26.
Brown's accuser, Rasheeda Ellis, could testify at that hearing. Outside court, Neary said he would ask for the charges to be dismissed at that time.
Ellis told the judge she does not plan to get a lawyer. On her behalf, municipal prosecutor Joseph J. Talafous told the judge that Ellis would give copies of e-mails to Neary before the hearing. Court rules require that both sides share any potential evidence.
Ellis eluded news reporters after court and a phone number under her name in Jersey City was unlisted. Neary asserted that the dispute was a mystery.
"Foxy says she's never had a problem with this woman," Neary said. He described Ellis as a former consultant to Brown's management company.
Neary said he does not yet know when and where any incident may have occurred, but said Jersey City police were not involved. Brown lives in New York, he said.
Brown, 26, also faces a trial in New York, where she was charged with misdemeanor assault in a dispute with two nail salon workers over the cost of a manicure in 2004.
