NYC Commune Leader Sues Ex-Member

NEW YORK (AP) ― A commune founder nearly killed by a shadowy figure in the stairwell of his New York City compound is suing the woman found innocent of shooting him.

Jeffrey Gross is seeking $20 million in damages from Rebekah Johnson, who was acquitted of the May 2006 shooting at the Ganas community on Staten Island.

The lawsuit portrays Johnson as disgruntled after being evicted. Gross claims she made up allegations of abuse to tarnish his image, stalked him, then ambushed him as he walked home from the movies and shot him six times. The jury disagreed.

Johnson's lawyer, Stanford Bandelli, says the jury already rendered its decision, and he doesn't expect a different result in a civil action.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday evening in state Supreme Court on Staten Island.
