St. Guillen Family Backs Bar Security Checks

Murdered Grad Student's Mom, Sister Accept Diploma

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) ― The mother of slain graduate student Imette St. Guillen is backing a proposal in the New York City Council that would require bars and clubs to perform background checks on security personnel.

Maureen St. Guillen met with Council Speaker Christine Quinn yesterday to offer her support for the measure.

St. Guillen says her family doesn't want to focus on her daughter's death, but rather on the "positive aspects of her life."

The City Council measure comes amid heightened scrutiny of New York nightspots following the death of Imette St. Guillen, who prosecutors say was killed by a bouncer at the SoHo bar where she was last seen alive.

The bouncer, Darryl Littlejohn, has pleaded not guilty in her death.
