Jeanine Pirro Speaks Exclusively With CBS 2

Watch CBS 2's Full Interview With Jeanine Pirro

by Magee Hickey
NEW YORK (CBS) ― Jeanine Pirro, the embattled Republican candidate for attorney general, sat down for an exclusive one-on-one interview with CBS 2's Political Reporter Marcia Kramer on Thursday.

Pirro defended her family and her actions in the wake of an embarrassing scandal over some very personal problems.

Pirro says she's a fighter, and that's why she's calling for a special prosecutor to look into the leak. That's also why she says she's doing everything she can to keep her family together.

"Look, I called upon the United States Attorney General, Alberto Gonzalez today, to commence an investigation. I want an answer. I want it in the next 30 days so the people of the state of New York can make a decision about this election based on the facts and not on a smear," Pirro said.

During the interview with CBS 2's Marcia Kramer, Pirro went on the offensive, trying to turn a federal investigation into a request to wiretap her philandering husband on its head.

The 55-year-old former Westchester D.A. said she's the one who's a victim of a crime.

"The leaking of sealed wiretaps is a felony. Someone did it, and I want to know who," she said.

On Friday morning, there are new revelations about the woman who Pirro suspected was fooling around with her husband.

According to the Daily News, it's the young wife of Albert Pirro's criminal defense lawyer -- Lisa Santangelo, 35, is on the cover of the Daily News Friday over the banner "Love Tangle."

The Santangelos are family friends and Westchester neighbors of the Pirros, and Lisa's husband Michael represented Al Pirro during his federal tax evasion trial.

The Santangelos confirm that federal investigators had visited their house as part of the grand jury probe into the request for wiretapping, but they both deny there was an affair.

Meanwhile, Marcia Kramer continued to press Pirro about her husband's scandals.

"Ever been tempted to run to divorce court and say I've had enough?" Kramer asked.

"We've all thought about doing things. But you know what? I chose to stay and fight," Pirro responded.

Kramer asked, "Some people say you could have been in the governor's mansion if not for Al Pirro…."

"People have said all kinds of things. 'You could have been this;' 'you could have been that,'" Pirro said.

"Do you think you could have been governor?" Kramer asked.

"It doesn't matter. I'm running for attorney general. I accept life, the cards that have been dealt to me. I'm a fighter," Pirro responded.

Pirro was already down 20 points in her race against democrat Andrew Cuomo before this scandal. Now she's clearly hoping to spark a sympathy backlash among women voters.
