Leona Helmsley To Be Buried In Sleepy Hollow
Helmsley's Mausoleum Cost $1.4 Million, Resembles A Greek Temple
NEW YORK (CBS/AP) ―
Even in death Leona Helmsley will have some impressive real estate. Her burial will be in a mausoleum at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
Frank Drahos - a groundskeeper at the cemetery for 49 years - tells the Journal News he yesterday cleaned around the 13-hundred square foot burial site, that contains her husband Harry. The mausoleum overlooks the Pocantico River and the Rockefeller estate.
The 87-year-old Helmsley died yesterday at her home in Greenwich, Connecticut.
There are 42-thousand people buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery including Washington Irving, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler and many common folk who lived along the waterfront.
Helmsley's mausoleum built in 2005 - cost $1.4 million and resembles a Greek temple. Its 12 columns are accompanied by three stained-glass windows of the New York City skyline. There are some boxwood trees, a Japanese maple and a winding walkway.
In 2005, Helmsley decided to relocate the remains of her husband, Harry Helmsley, from Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx because she wanted a more secluded resting place. She needed special building permits because of the mausoleum's size.
