Severe Weather Clearing Out From Tri-State
Deadly Lightning Strikes, Airport Delays Wrought By Severe Weather
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
This Sunday was anything but sunny. Thunderstorms thrashed the tri-state area. Various warnings, watches and advisories were in effect for the entire region, and area airports experienced massive delays. The severe weather finally started clearing out by the evening.
Departures from J.F.K. Airport were delayed by over four hours, and arrivals by over five hours. At LaGuardia, departures were experiencing meager 15 minute delays, but arrivals were three hours behind schedule.
Flights departing from Newark
left four hours later than scheduled, while arrivals were delayed by over two hours.Service along the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Railroad was delayed up to two hours in both directions because of a LIPA power problem affecting the LIRR's signal system between Patchogue and Speonk.
Much of the area saw severe thunderstorms that were capable of producing penny sized hail and damaging winds in excess of 70 mph.
At least 10 people were struck by lightning in both New York and New Jersey.
Temperatures reached a high of 88 and dropped to a low of 72 Sunday.
Monday is expected to have temperatures in the upper 80s and see partly sunny conditions. There will be a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Sunny. Highs in the upper 80s. Northwest winds 5 to 10 mph, becoming west in the afternoon.
Wednesday: High 85, Low 70
Partly sunny in the morning, then mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Highs in the mid 80s. Chance of rain 40 percent.
Thursday: High 85, Low 70
Mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of showers. Highs in the mid 80s.
