Police Identify Fake Firefighter Suspect
Man Wanted In Sex Attack Case
NEW YORK (AP) ―
New York City Police have officially named the man they want to talk to in connection with a phony fireman forcing his way into an apartment and sexually assaulting a woman on Halloween night.
Police say 41-year-old Peter Braunstein is wanted for questioning.
The tabloid newspapers have named Braunstein for days as the chief suspect in the case.
Braunstein was an editor at a woman's magazine. He has been missing since Halloween when a 34-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in her apartment.
Police say a fake fireman set a small fire in a hallway outside a woman's apartment so she would open the door.
Police said the attack happened at 6 p.m. Halloween night in Chelsea.
Officials reported that the fake fireman knocked on the door of the woman saying there was a fire in the hallway. When she opened the door, the attacker put a cloth soaked with a chemical over her face -- knocking her out.
She was then bound with duct tape and repeatedly sexually assaulted over a 12-hour period.
Police said they've recovered the gas mask that the attacker had over his face.
