WCBSTV.com Special Report On Upstate N.Y., N.J. and Pennsylvania FloodingThere have been evacuations all along the Delaware River from Mercer to Hunterdon counties. Emergency management officials said most of the people who left their homes probably won't be able to return anytime soon, and police are warning evacuees to heed the warnings and stay away.
"The bottom line is to the residents: Do not go back to your houses. The sun is shining, but the water's still high," said N.J. State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes.
Residents are saying this is the worst flood they've ever seen.
"This is the third time in two years. You live with it and deal with it," said Phillipsburg resident Don Walker.
"You live by the river, this is what's going to happen," he said.
New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine said he would ask the federal government for help with cleanup, but he's happy with how everyone has come together.
"I am very pleased with the public's response, the response of officials in this area, and I think we're moving in a good direction," Corzine said.
The thousands who have left their homes are waiting to return home, have known all along that it's not going to be easy to rebuild.
