Body Of Teen Swept Away With House Found

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBS/AP) ― Police and rescuers said they've found the body of a 15-year-old girl lost in this week's flooding.

Dick Martinkovic, the Sullivan County's public safety commissioner, told the Times Herald Record rescuers recovered the body of Jamie Bertholf of Livingston Manor, about 100 miles southwest of Albany.

Bertholf's house had collapsed in the devastating flooding early Wednesday morning.

The search for the teenager had continued all day following Wednesday's disaster. The rivers have already crested in Livingston Manor, and what's left now is a massive cleanup job.

Police began their search by helicopters, looking for the 15-year-old, who was in her family's home when the floodwaters of Cat And Tail Creek literally lifted it off it's foundation and swept the teenager and her house away.

According to John Parker of Livingston Manor, "They nearly saved her. A man was telling her to jump, and she wouldn't jump. She went back up the stairs and then the house folded around her. Otherwise she would be alive today."

The Bertholf tragedy was the worst among those suffering in the 13 upstate counties declared states of emergency by Gov. George Pataki.

Tens of thousands of upstate New Yorkers were displaced by widespread floods that destroyed homes, swamped highways and flooded basements that were being pumped out Thursday.

To many families in this region this is nothing new.

"This is the third flood we've experienced in Livingston Manor, so it's difficult to always try to bounce back -- but we will like we had before," said Luisa Parker of Livingston Manor.
