Knicks' Run Comes To Halt With Lopsided Loss In Toronto
TORONTO (AP) ―
Jalen Rose and the Toronto Raptors ended New York's winning streak with a record game.
Rose had a season-high 31 points and the Raptors reached a franchise-high in points, ending New York's six-game winning streak with a 129-103 rout Sunday.
Morris Peterson added a season-high 28 and Chris Bosh had 23 for the Raptors, who surpassed the previous record of 128 points -- done twice. They last did it March 13, 2005, against Philadelphia.
Toronto also scored at least 30 points in all four quarters for the first time in franchise history. And the Raptors shot 59 percent against New York's porous defense.
"It's pretty strange for us to have a big-time blowout like that," said Rose, whose team is 13-24. "When we have a record like we have overall, you don't see too many games like that."
The Knicks entered 2006 in last place in the Atlantic Division with a 7-21 mark. But they have played like a new team recently -- enjoying their longest winning streak since a seven-game run from Dec. 22, 2000-Jan. 7, 2001.
But the defense hasn't always been there.
"It's fool's gold if you are winning games and are not playing the right way," said Antonio Davis, who had two points and zero rebounds.
Eddy Curry had a team-high 20 points for the Knicks, but just eight after the first quarter. Sixth man Jamal Crawford, averaging 25.8 points in his previous four games, had 12.
The Raptors, one of the worst NBA's worst teams last month, are playing better recently, wining seven of nine.
"Jalen Rose killed us," New York's Stephon Marbury said.
Devils Win Sixth StraightPatrik Elias and Viktor Kozlov scored for New Jersey in a shootout and the Devils beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 Sunday night for their season-high sixth straight win.
New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur stopped 29 shots and tied former Blackhawks goalie Tony Esposito for fifth on the NHL's all-time wins list with 423. Brodeur entered the game coming off back-to-back shutouts of Philadelphia and Vancouver.
Brian Gionta opened the scoring with a power-play goal 4:34 in to give the Devils a 1-0 lead. Following a faceoff in the Chicago zone and scramble in the crease, he scored from a few feet out.
Men's BasketballDouby, Rutgers Outlast DePaul In OTQuincy Douby scored six of his team high 20 points and Jimmie Inglis scored all seven of his points in overtime as Rutgers defeated DePaul 78-68 on Sunday.
The game was tied 58-58 when Marcus Webb opened the scoring in overtime with a basket for Rutgers (12-4, 2-1 Big East), followed by two free throws by Inglis, giving the Scarlet Knights a 62-58 lead.
After Sammy Mejia made the score 64-62, Douby hit a three-pointer with 3:04 remaining, and DePaul would get no closer than four points thereafter.
Manhattan Win Streak Grows To 10Jason Wingate hit a spinning drive with 12 seconds left and Mike Konovelchick followed with a steal and two free throws with 3 seconds remaining to give Manhattan its 10th straight victory, 77-74 over Siena on Sunday.
The Jaspers (10-4, 6-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) led by 11 points with 6:15 remaining, but Siena (7-7, 2-4) went on a 13-1 run and took a 74-73 lead on Tay Fisher's 3-pointer with 43 seconds left.
Wingate's layup put Manhattan back in front. After a timeout, Konovelchick stole the ball from Siena's Kojo Mensah, was fouled by Fisher and made the two free throws.
McCrae Powers Fordham Over DuquesneCorey McCrae was 6-for-7 from 3-point range and scored 20 points to lead Fordham to a 90-63 victory over Duquesne on Sunday, the Dukes' eighth consecutive loss.
Bryant Dunston added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Rams (7-9, 2-1 Atlantic-10), who led 57-31 at halftime. Sebastien Greene had 12 points and freshman Chris Bethel added 11 on 5-for-5 shooting.
Dunston had seven points as Fordham took a 15-5 lead in the opening 4:19.
