Nixzmary Begged Grandmother To Take Her Away
Maria Gonzales "Furious" With ACS
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Cloaked in a red-lined black jacket, exhausted maternal grandmother Maria Gonzales returned to her daughter's Lower East Side apartment Friday night after visiting a city morgue to see autopsy pictures of her granddaughter Nixzmary Brown.
"She just looked at the picture and said 'Oh my God' and she just kissed it," family spokesperson Awilda Cordero said.
A photo of Nixzmary dressed as a red Power Ranger was taken on Halloween with her siblings. It was the last time her grandmother saw her alive. She says Nixzmary asked her to take her home to Puerto Rico.
Gonzales says she didn't notice any abuse, but she's still furious with the Administration for Children's Services.
"This is what the family's angry about ... how could ACS walk into the house and say everything is OK, let's leave," Cordero said. "But they didn't even check the child. The child already had bruises when they went there."
Edward Brown is furious too.
Though he wasn't her biological father, Brown cared for Nixzmary from birth to age 3, and had two other children with her mother, Nixzalis Santiago. Santiago and stepfather Cesar Rodriguez are charged with Nixzmary's murder.
"I want to kill this guy, that's my reaction," Brown said.
Family members claim Rodriguez abused the children's mother too. Edward Brown worries his children were also victims.
"I hope they didn't go through the same way ... he didn't abuse them mentally or physically," he said.
