Grandmothers Of Nixzmary, Quachaun Unite At Wake
by Hazel Sanchez
BRONX (CBS) ―
On Monday night at the wake of 4-year-old Quachaun Browne, the little boy's grandmother, Sally Alleyne, and the grandmother of Nixzmary Brown, Maria Gonzalez, showed a powerful symbol of strength through solidarity.
Walking side by side were two mothers who lost their grandchildren to the hands of a murderer, and their daughters to the arm of the law.
"I'm so glad that she came to see me today because I really needed that support," Alleyne said. "And it really made me feel that I'm not alone."
On Jan. 30, Alleyne woke up to a nightmare. Her grandson Quachaun Browne was allegedly beaten to death by his mother's live-in boyfriend Jose Calderon. Alleyne's daughter -- Quachaun's mother -- Aleshia Smith also sits in jail accused of doing nothing to save the child.
It is a loss all too familiar to Maria Gonzalez, who arrived at the wake with teddy bear in hand.
On Jan. 11, Gonzalez's daughter, Nixzalis Santiago, was thrown in jail for the murder of Gonzalez' grandchild, 7-year-old Nixzmary Brown.
Brown was allegedly killed at the hands of her stepfather, Cesar Rodriguez, while her mother stood by.
"Maria just wants them to know that she's feeling the same way she's feeling and she knows how they're feeling," Gonzalez said through a translator. "So that's why she's here to give support to the grandma."
