Tales Of Sleep Deprivation, Stress In Phillipsburg
No Rest For The Weary As Residents Pick Up Pieces
by Christine Sloan
PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (CBS) ―
Dave Yacko used a tube on Thursday to get in and out of his house, which is now part of the Delaware River.
"Last night, I went to my neighbor's to take a shower and came back down," Yacko said.
Yacko and several other residents decided to stay in Phillipsburg, even as the raging waters of the Delaware came dangerously close.
"I thrive on storms, I haven't slept for two days," he said.
Carl Fortin was a bit more fortunate. He and his wife spent the night in their new restaurant.
"I slept there all night," said Fortin, pointing to a couch in his restaurant.
They had no power and couldn't eat any of their own food because it had spoiled.
They kept their eyes on the river.
"Pretty long, pretty much a waiting game, didn't know what to expect," Meredith Fortin said.
Added Carl Fortin: "I went out and kept looking."
Dozens of homes along the Delaware are under water.
Looking from above, you can see the damage -- a lifeguard stand, the only trace of a swimming pool.
In Phillipsburg, the Walkers can see the devastation from their backyard, which is filled with water.
When asked is she wants to move out now, Heather Walker said the sooner the better.
"Honestly, yes, it's a pain cleaning up, she said. "I spent the night at my mother's but kept waking up, wondering."
