Cops: Plumbing Snake Used In 'Sadistic Assault'

Disabled Maintenance Worker Attacked At Bowling Alley

SHIRLEY, N.Y. (CBS/AP) ― Two youths followed a developmentally disabled maintenance man into the bathroom of the bowling alley where he worked and sexually abused him with a plumbing snake, seriously injuring him, police said Wednesday.

The 21-year-old worker at AMF Bowling Centers' Shirley Lanes was held down by one of the youths and sodomized with the plumbing tool by the other in the Sunday night attack, Suffolk County police said.

The youths forced the plumbing snake, which is used to unclog drains, into the worker's rectum and spun it several times, causing him severe pain, internal injury and bleeding, according to a police news release, which said the worker was "sadistically assaulted."

The worker was admitted that night to a hospital, where the plumbing snake was removed.

The two youths, Steven Rodriguez, 19, and Michael Lunsford, 17, were arrested this week and were being charged with aggravated sexual abuse, said police, who scheduled a news conference for Thursday to discuss the attack and show a photo of the plumbing snake.

A manager at the bowling alley said he couldn't speak on Wednesday evening about the plumbing snake attack and referred questions to corporate owner AMF Bowling Worldwide Inc., whose offices were closed.

Rodriguez and Lunsford, both of Shirley, were being held by police Wednesday night.

The only telephone listed for a Rodriguez on the street where Rodriguez lives had been disconnected. There was no telephone listing for Lunsford in Shirley or the surrounding area. Police said they didn't have information on whether the youths had lawyers or how to contact their families.
