Belleville Police Officer Killed In Crash

BELLEVILLE, N.J. (AP) ― A Belleville police officer is dead and another is seriously injured after their cruiser hit another vehicle right over the town's border in Nutley.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office says the officer driving the cruiser lost control after the collision and hit a utility pole on Saturday morning. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville.

The female officer who was a passenger in the cruiser was taken to University Hospital in Newark with serious injuries, but her condition was improving Saturday afternoon.

The driver of the other vehicle was treated at an area hospital and released.

Prosecutor's Office spokesman Paul Loriquet said both officers were ejected from the cruiser.

Loriquet didn't immediately have more information about the crash.
