New Yorkers will need to camp out next to city swimming pools, in city cooling centers or by their air conditioners a little longer as the tri-state area heads into a sixth straight day of above 90 degrees, with a heat advisory in effect until 6 p.m. Monday.
Con Ed crews worked non-stop through the weekend to bring power back to 2,000 Brooklyn homes that were knocked off the grid.
Thousands in Park Slope, Bay Ridge, Sunset Park and Borough Park suffered through at least part of the weekend's sweltering heat without air conditioning, some opening up hydrants to find relief:
"The water here is good, it helps for the children so they can cool themselves off," said NYC resident Ana Avila.
Con Ed workers handed out dry in attempts to preserve groceries spoiling once the power went out. It worked for Faustino Gomez:
"Look, as you can see, we got groceries here in the cooler. We have steaks, hot dogs, ice cream and chicken
a little bit of everything," Gomez said.
An additional 89,000 customers in Brooklyn received automated phone calls telling them to turn off TVs and other appliances, including air conditioners, as workers tried to fix fried cables in manholes on the fifth day of 90 degree heat. A lot of Con Ed customers were more than a little upset:
"You get a lot of elderly people with heart problems
things like that, they can't take the heat so they can't conserve the way Con Ed wants them too, said Sue Dale of Sunset Park.
"I think it's ridiculous. My bill shot up 50 percent and I'm getting browned out," said Steve Hernandez, also of Sunset Park.
To make things worse for people across the tri-state, the possibility of severe weather throughout the tri-state area will remain throughout the day.
A heat advisory is issued when the heat and humidity combine to produce heat index values of at least 95 degrees or more for more than one day.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in a cool environment, stay out of the sun and check on the elderly periodically.
In addition, anĀ approaching cold front is bringing with it the possibility of severe thunderstorms to the tri-state area at some point on Monday.
Hail to 1.5 inches in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph and dangerous lightning are possible.
