Rockland Community Angered Over Proposed Sex Shop
Actor Stephen Baldwin Leading Charge Against Store
NYACK (CBS) ―
Sexy stuff for sale, coming soon! Workers are putting the final touches on the yet-to-be-named sex shop, which is expected to sell the same items as its competitor, Romantic Depot, about a mile away.
But owner Leslie Fernandopulle is hoping to beat out the competition, recently submitting plans to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Concerned resident Ed Ehrhardt says, "The pedophiles, whether their gonna be there or come from other towns in the county, you don't know."
Actor Stephen Baldwin, who has a home nearby, is playing the starring role in trying to keep the adult store from ever opening its doors. Baldwin, who is currently shooting a movie in Los Angeles, has reportedly vowed to take photos of patrons' license plates and publish them in a local paper.
Located just off the New York State Thruway, on a very busy Route 59, the sex shop is slated to open in the spring. As far as preventing the owners from being open 24-7, Nyack's mayor says his hands are tied.
"It's causing quite an uproar but as far as I know, according to law, they can do that," John Shields said.
Fernandopulle refused to talk on camera, but released a statement saying quote, "I'm not doing anything illegal. They gave me a permit and I'm opening my business."
The sex shop drama in this small town continues to heat up.
