Do You Feel Safe Enough To Fly?

Terror Plot: CBS 2's Full Coverage Archive

9/11 Special Report

(CBS) London officials called it "the big one." Homegrown U.K. terrorists plotted to board airliners from American Airlines, Continental Airlines and United Airlines, and blow them up using explosive material hidden in carry-on luggage.

A top British police official said the Islamic terror plot was "intended to be mass murder on an unimaginable scale." Don't be too sure - we New Yorkers can imagine quite a bit.

Now WCBSTV.com wants to know, has news of this thwarted attack made you feel too unsafe to fly? E-mail us your thoughts at wcbstvwebteam@cbs.com and let others know what you think.

What Are People Saying?

For those comments i read about a man getting up set because he had to wait too long to get on because of all the security measures that they are taking to protect us...i can't believe you would think that! They are looking out for all of us and trying to make us feel comfortable and to say that is crazy. I am a firm believer that they can do what ever they need to for us to be safe. I would get ther 5 hours early if i had to to save my life just by waiting in a line to be checked. I thank them for finding those people who were about to try that again. i have never like flying at all but after 9/11 i take a rosary with me and just pray that we will be alright, i look everyone up and down and may be too quickly to judge certain people but its because of what happened is why those people are being judged. So keep on checking people and if i can't take in a bottled water well i guess i will have to wait 2 hours to drink, or hears a cleaver idea get a water when your on the plane! God bless you all and may god keep all safe!

i am frequent flyer person every year ever since 9-11. i am always watchful to other and not to worry about this terror. Now , since they dont allow carry on bags, which i have to agree. They could take some liquid formula without being identify. once they are a plane , they can go to the bathroom and mix the formula and then we all die. They need to get some technology now that anyone can go on the plane but the scanner need to identify the formula inside the indgredient. Like if you are carrying a bottle of water. When you put thru the scanner , it will show a bottle of water with formula H2O. That what we need today.

I find it amazing that the News Media is so fixated on this issue. The first step in providing safety is personnel, you need to be aware of your surroundings the second is there external security as there is in the NY Metro airports (so much scrutiny that it seems hard to believe that this type of plot could succeed). This leads to the question "Are our allies as diligent?" I would hope so. It is as safe as the closet extremist who is willing to die for a "CAUSE". I haven't run in to any have you?

Yes, I feel safe to fly, but I have a question that hasn't been answered. If I can't take liquids on the plane, what about my cameras? I have to take two digital cameras on my flight, plus a telephoto lens and recharger for the cameras. If I check these, who will agree to incur $8k if they are lost or broken?

We are travelling to Finland this Sunday and fortunately flying directly instead of going thru London like majority have to do. At least watching news for last couple of days prepared us to pack wisely. There is upside to the situation, it is the safest time to fly in my opinion due to high level of security and do not have put up with people walking on the plane with oversized hand luggage. I do have one question that may be you can ask some one. Why are they selling water after passengers clear the first security point and consume before boarding plane? Why not allow them to take it until boarding? Is it because they are trying to make a profit from people who have no choice but to purchase at inflated prices? In any case more security is better than none. Thank you for the opportunity.

I am done flying. Not because I am afraid, but because I have grown frustrated with all the security and scares. I refuse to wait hours to board a flight. I left JFK yesterday and returned home. I just got fed up with waiting at the airport. I was going to visit family for the weekend. I hate to say it, but as far as me ever flying again, the terrorists have won. I will never fly again. I don't think it is worth the trouble.

Hi web team,

I think what Mayor Bloomberg and Gov. Pataki (and Rudy Guiliani before them) have been saying is correct: you can't allow terrorists to scare you out of living your life. With all the security in place, now may actually be the safest time to fly. The British caught this -- international officials are looking out. I'm not saying don't be vigilant of your surroundings -- it obviously still goes, "if you see something, say something". But people can't be held hostage in fear of living their lives. Then the terrorists get what they're looking for....people afraid of them. Fly, be careful -- but don't allow them to stop you.

I have never felt safe since 911. My last flight was one month before the incident. However, should I take another flight, I would not mind the lines due to precautionary measures. People need to calm down, stop complaining, and realize that without the added security, many of us may not be here now. My view, stay in prayer, enjoy your life, and continue to travel, but do it wisely.

I don't feel safe flying at all.

Dear Channel 2 News;

I feel that banning liquid products might be a good idea but it is not the answer. What ever chemicals are being used to make a bomb should be taken off the market. They should not be sold to the public. I'm sure when it comes to the safety of people we can fine a substitution of these chemicals to put into our products.

Safe? Difficult question to answer. When are we ever really "safe"?
