A sign warns of the gap between trains and platforms on the LIRR.

Once again, a Long Island Rail Road passenger suffered injuries after falling into the gap between a train and the boarding ramp.
The incident occurred at the New Hyde Park station and the gap where the victim fell appeared to be 8 to 10 inches wide -- enough to warrant a recorded warning to passengers.
There have been 130 injuries over the last two years from people falling into the gap, but fortunately this one wasn't too serious. The victim in this case, a 69-year-old woman, is listed in good condition at Winthrop University Hospital with unknown injuries.
Within moments, rescue units were on the scene and a recorded warning was played for all passengers.
This latest incident comes three months after the death of 18-year-old Minnestoa native Natalie Smead who was killed by a passing train after she fell into the gap at Woodside Station -- just hours before LIRR officials planned to begin work at that station.
Already the LIRR has worked to lessen the gaps at South Hampton, Shea Stadium, and Rosedale stations. Crews will begin work on the Woodside station early Saturday morning.
