Another Heat Wave Sizzles Tri-State

Heat Advisories, Warnings Issued Across CBS 2 Viewing Area

NEW YORK (CBS) ― With a third straight day of 90 degree temperatures expected throughout the tri-state, Friday will mark the second heat wave this summer. But if you think Friday night will be the end of the high temps, you're wrong.

CBS 2's John Elliot tells us that Saturday's temperatures will surpass Friday's expected high of 95 degrees. Not only that, Elliot says, the humidity will make the air feel even hotter. So brace yourself!

Most areas will see mostly sunny, yet hazy skies with temperatures running in the low- to mid-90s. Don't be fooled though, as the sun reaches its highest point past the noon hour on Friday, temps will feel like high 90s into the triple-digits.

Walking Manhattan's streets, people were seen shedding clothing and trying to do anything possible to maintain cool. Subways were even busier than normal, as people dodged from the sun into New York City's underground transportation tunnels.

A heat advisory has been issued for the city and some surrounding counties beginning at noon and ending Saturday at 6 p.m. An excessive heat warning has been issued for Mercer County and northwest Burlington Count from noon Friday until 8 p.m. Saturday.

To help ease the pain, the Office of Emergency Management announced cooling centers will be open Friday through Sunday in New York City. You can find a cooling center near you by clicking here.

Friday night, high pressure will keep skies fair and it will feel a bit muggy with lows in the mid-70s.

Saturday will feel much like Friday, but expect temperatures to jump a degree or two with an even hotter and rather sticky day on tap. Heat index values will be in the upper-90s to around 100 degrees. Elliot forecasts some possible relief on Sunday, as a front from the north could possibly move into the area.

Extended Forecast:

Sunday: Chance of thunderstorms, warm and muggy.

High: 88°
Low: 75°

Monday: A better bet to see thunderstorms.

High: 85°
Low: 73°

Tuesday: Cools down some more, but still at risk for storms.

Low: 71°
