Preview: Latest Trends In Clothing Accessories
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
One sector of retail that hasn't fallen as hard a victim to the recession is accessories. It's the one area where you can refresh and update your look and not spend a lot of money. Designers are presenting their latest in handbags and headbands, flowery flip-flops and eye-catching chains to retailers at "Accessories The Show."
"Accessories are the key to the fashion industry, you can change anything, you can change your outfit, you can change your look from day to night," said Stacy Samet, director of sales at the gathering.
And aside from the aisles bulging with bling, the biggest trend is in smart pricing that's buyer and consumer friendly. "They're shopping for a lower-priced item but they're still really shopping for a trend. They really only want what is trending in the market," Samet said.
And the market showed a strong interest in scarves, an all-season fashion-friendly item, good for any age at a variety of prices. "The cool thing about a scarf is that it pulls together your look and adds a whole new dimension," said Irenka Jakubiak, the editor of "Accessories Magazine."
In jewelry, the trend is in standout pieces, in both color and a wide variety of textures and shapes. One layered look in chains was a big hit at the Show as well.
"So don't be shy and think you can't achieve this look at a minimal price point cause you can do it at $35, $40 and make a great fashion statement for the season," Jakubiak said.
Another easy, inexpensive way to make a fashion statement is with hair accessories. "It's a wonderful way to dress up your look and have fun and it's so affordable, any hair cut, any hairstyle slip it on and you have a whole new look," Jakubiak said.
"I think a buyer realizes that it is very important, that they must have new product in their stores for consumers to come and shop," Samet said.
