S.I. Student Hospitalized After Being Hit By Car

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A student was fighting for her life Friday after she was hit by a car while crossing the street in front of Tottenville High School on Staten Island.

One motorist stopped at Luten Avenue and was rammed him from behind by another car.

The victim was under the car and in full cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived. There were no obvious signs of injury on her body and they began CPR immediately and loaded her into an ambulance. She was arrived after they left the scene.

"Upperclass students, you know, normally some of them, if they have all their credits, get out earlier. It was a dismissal for those students and they were leaving," said Principal John Tuminaro. "My understanding is that the drivers were also finished for the day."

Students were advised of the accident over the PA system but continued with classes as the investigation went on outside along the straight stretch of roadway that sometimes doubles as a drag strip, according to neighbors and parents.

"The kids race. I've seen it. And you drive a little fast because there are no stop signs. It's one straight road," said parent Roseanne Pasarelli."

"It's very crowded in the morning and in the afternoon. A speed bump probably would help the situation," said substitute teacher Marie McNeice.

"My focus is going to be on counseling for the students. We have students who witnessed it obviously. And the most important thing is that our thoughts and prayers are with our student, that she pulls through," Tuminaro said.

The victim remains at Staten Island University Hospital North in critical condition. She's 17 and lives in the Eltingville Section.

Police have not released her name, nor have they filed any charges.
