Police, Advocates Clash Over Access To Shelters

Authorities Want to Search For Sex Offenders In Emergency Shelters

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ― Hartford police and advocates for the homeless disagree over how much access police should have in search of sex offenders who live in emergency shelters.

City police said they need more authority to enforce the law requiring sex offenders to maintain up-to-date residency registration and contact offenders living in shelters.

Advocates for the homeless said it is an invasion of their clients' right to privacy.

Hartford police have had mixed results seeking access to shelters.
Carol Walter, executive director of the Connecticut "Coalition to End Homelessness," said it's not legal for police to gain access to a private entity without due process.
