Amtrak Corrects Train Signal Problems Near Newark

Residual Delays Remain On Amtrak, NJ Transit Service

NEWARK (CBS) ― Trains on the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast, and Raritan Valley lines were delayed up to an hour because of an Amtrak signal problem.

Along the platforms riders texted and called saying they would be late.

Passenger Albert waited "since 6:30 this morning, two hours now" for a train to Bridgewater.

Tom Barbour explained, "The 7:59 never left and now we're waiting for the 8:55….This is a little bit hectic, not knowing what's going to happen."

To help relieve the rider congestion, NJ Transit buses also accepted train tickets this morning. Deciding the delays and packed trains were too much of a headache, many drove to Newark instead.

"We sat outside Newark to Penn Station for about 45 minutes. Not today, an hour an a half," passenger Matt Toriello said.

Amtrak had fixed the signal problem by 8:30 this morning, but passengers were still waiting on the trains because of residual delays.

"We have an 8:30 meeting so that's out of the window, but thanks for cell phones you call in and are off for the day," said Mike Curio.

"I heard about it on the radio and drove into Newark just to make the connection, so I took the easy way," Mike Haberstick said.

Because the signal problem has been fixed, NJ Transit does not expect problems or delays for the commute home later Monday.
