Dozens of Queens residents are looking for a new place to live, after authorities said their building should never have been built in the first place.
Officials said the building on Astoria Boulevard has no smoke detectors, sprinkler systems, or fire escapes.
Inspectors described it as a potential death trap. The problems were discovered after a tenant complained about bedbugs.
"Now I'm scared, because we don't know where we live," one resident said.
"One baby. He have five months. That's why I'm nervous, because what can I do with my baby?" another resident said.
The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents, of whom nearly half are young children.
The Department of Buildings said the property owner returns from the Bahamas Monday and will probably face more than $330,000 in fines.
