A baby calf on the way to the slaughterhouse escaped into the streets of Brooklyn on Tuesday night, touching off a wild cow chase that had police cars and ambulances criss-crossing every which way.
The 4-6 month old male Hereford calf made a run for it out of a truck, just as its new owner was about to lay claim to it and take the animal to a slaughterhouse in Yonkers.
"The police actually had to tranquilize him and chase him. They brought him in here basically, he was loose, just roaming the streets -- the little, baby calf," said Najiyyah Ali of Animal Care and Control, who said she's never had a baby calf brought in during her seven years working.
The calf triggered a police chase through Bay Ridge, sirens blaring and lights flashing during its attempts to catch the cow. For some area bar and restaurant patrons, it was quite a bizarre scene. Many were unsure if they had really just seen a calf high-tailing it down the street.
"I just happened to look out the window and I saw basically what I thought was a cow running down the street," said Robert Moore, who witnesses the melee from inside Three Jolly Pigeons bar where he bartends. "By the time we got out it was really moving, so by the time we got outside it was really moving down the street."
Terry Lindquist was caught in the traffic jam Tuesday night created by the police chase for the calf. Lindquist had the presence of mind to pull out his cell phone camera and record the ordeal.
"I get surrounded by all these cops and ESU trucks and I see this cow, out of all things. I thought they were chasing somebody," Lindquist said. "I didn't know what was going on and then I see a cow come between me and a double-parked car. He hauls up that way and the cops are just chasing him."
The cow's caretakers at Animal Control have taken quite a liking to their latest resident and have even given him a name. "I'm calling him Herbie. He's adorable, everybody loves him, he's actually getting really comfortable here," Ali said.
If the owner of the calf does not come forward to Animal Care & Control in by Friday at 1 p.m., Herbie will escape the slaughterhouse and be adopted by a farm.
