Herbie The Wayward Calf Gets A Home

Calf That Ran Through The Streets Of Brooklyn

by Pablo Guzmán
BROOKLYN (CBS) ― The 4-month-old calf that made a break for it three days ago, dashing out of a truck taking it to the slaughterhouse and setting off a wild chase by police through the streets of Bay Ridge, has escaped certain death.

The deadline for the owner to claim the animal has gone. Probably because he would have had to answer a lot of questions from us and the police about from whom he got the animal and to whom he was selling the meat.

Ruth Allen, manager of the Animal Care and Control facility in East New York where Herbie, as they've named him, has been housed, said even if the owner showed up by the 1 p.m. deadline to lay a claim, "He would not get the animal. We are about life here. And from what we can see, this was just about killing the calf."

The deadline passed, and a minivan from the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary arrived to take Herbie to safety.

They have already lined up an adoptive farm family. After a few days at the Woodstock Sanctuary for observation, Herbie will be in a loving place, they say.

Your response to this story has been overwhelming. Many of you even offered money to start a "Save Herbie!" campaign. We thank you, and applaud your goodness.

You might want to consider visiting the Web sites whose links can be found on this page to find out more about the work of the Animal Care & Control Center -- in particular, they say they have many dogs who need care -- or the Woodstock Animal Farm Sanctuary.

I am sure Herbie would thank you.

Best of the holidays and the New Year to all of you!
