Son Enters Plea In Mother's NY Motel Death
UTICA, N.Y. (CBS) ―
A 27-year-old mentally troubled man charged with beating his mother to death will be institutionalized.
Ryan Peeler of Westmoreland pleaded not criminally responsible by reason of mental disease or defect for killing Rhonda DuPont.
Investigators said Peeler fatally beat his 51-year-old mother in January when she arrived at his motel apartment to give him food.
Peeler initially faced murder and manslaughter charges. As a result of his plea in Oneida County Court Thursday, Peeler will be sent to the Mid-Hudson Psychiatric Center for treatment, instead of prison.
Another hearing will be held to determine whether he's dangerously mentally ill, and whether he should be housed in a secure or non-secure psychiatric facility.
The Town of Westmoreland has a
population of 6,207, according to the 2000 census.
