L.I. Teen Fatally Struck By Car While Riding Bike
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Police on Long Island say a 15-year-old boy was struck and killed by a car while riding his bicycle in Smithtown.
Police say Nicholas Svercel, of Ronkonkoma, was riding across Route 347 at about 4 p.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a car driven by 25-year-old Alex Helkin.
According to witnesses, Helkin had a green light.
Police say Svercel, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was riding with three other teens and may have believed the light had changed when he started to cross the street.
The investigation is continuing.
The Suffolk County Police Department has a force of around 2,500 officers.
